Ending and Beginnings......Part 1

In the last few days I discovered I had not posted since the end of May. So I am going to attempt to catch up over the next few posts. Since the Memorial Day Holiday life spun out of control. Besides my involvement with Levine Cardiac Kids (LCK) and Family Advisory Council (FAC) at Levine Children's Hospital and the required meetings, I feeling like I have been chasing the bus I missed.

I attended a meeting at the hospital where we invited families who had recently joined LCK. We met some amazing families. I met the Jackson family whose son is in the hospital now and earlier last week had his third open heart surgery and reached the 100 day mark in the hospital. I am not going to lie I felt incredibly blessed Madelynn was only in the hospital just under 30 days all together. The strength it requires to be a parent of a heart patient or any other chronically ill child is almost unbearable.

In talking to some of these families and my heart family friends, I discovered something I am not sure I ever did until recently. At some point in life you have to grieve the loss of the perfect baby with all 10 fingers and toes. You have to let go of the normal life you dreamed about and accept the massive curve in the road during a rainstorm that is now your life.

For us personally, we had to accept all the 'ologists', the revolving door medical bills and most important find the new "normal"; what ever the he** that is. I used to shelter Madelynn and I believe in some cases hold her back. But I have discovered when given the chance to fly she will soar with the best of them.

Don't get me wrong there will always be that reality check when  we walk through the pediatric cardiologist door and I mentally hold my breath until we walk out. Most parents just get an annual physical for their child, Madelynn also has to get a heart and lung check too. Because of the way Madelynn was diagnosed, I am always leery walking into the appointments. I will never assume everything will be fine again.

On a day to day basis, I let go of that stomach twisting chaos and focus on the fact that Madelynn will be four at the end of the summer, can write her name, log-on the computer and play games and asks a plethora of questions everyday. The amount of questions she wants answered is absolutely exhausting. However, I just remind myself it is how she learns.

Every heart family has a different but similar journey and are also at different mile markers on that road. Knowing we are all traveling together and there are certain things you never have to explain to them is a huge comfort. I am grateful to them and hope I can always return the favor to new families.

Cleaning out my closet.....

Since the first of the year, I have been de-cluttering my house life. Recently I decided to go through my closet. I don't think I have done this since before Madelynn was born. It was in desperate need.

Since the weather has been warmer, I decided to pack up my winter clothes. You know that alarm you hear when the reactor is about to blow and the lights are suddenly flashing faster........"total annihilation in 10...9....8....." Yeah I cleaned it out just in time.

At the bottom of the sweatshirt pile I found the following.....

There are only a handful of people who know where this sweatshirt came from (that is until now). When I was in the 8th grade about to graduate to a high school where I knew no one, I was given this gift. Most people don't even remember their friends from 8th grade. I remember all of them. Some of them I was with since pre-school and still talk to today. Lots of fond memories....

Then I came across this one........

One of the traditions in my high school is the senior sweatshirt. One of our classmates designed it. High school was not what I always hoped it would be but I walked away with treasured friends. When I think of those times, the memories with those friends that made me both laugh and cry were worth their weight in gold.

Finally I found this one........

Upon finishing high school I headed off to college. Not just any college but the school that both my father and brother graduated from. Talk about an eye opening experience. My best friend and I were college roommates our sophomore year we picked up one more roomie. The three of us are still friends.

When I scan through my friends list on facebook I can tell you something significant about every person in, including how I met them. They fall into one of five categories family, elementary school friends, high school friends, college friends and after college. Besides family some of them I have known for 35 years.

Thanks for the memories.....Do any of you still have these sweatshirts???

Birthdays.....

Sometimes life doesn't always allow you to do things exactly on the day you should.

This year has started out to be a BIG year for me. This year about two weeks ago I turned forty, yes that was 40!! Less than a week later I did something really stupid....Trying to be that multi tasking mom I grabbed a REALLY hot pan bare-handed and didn't let go right away. I spent 3 hours in the Urgent Care and walked out with all 5 of my fingers on my left hand wrapped in blue medical tape. I thought I was slowly becoming Smurfette.

You would think at this stage in my life I would have made a smarter choice. Sometimes wanting to spend every minute with my kids something has to give. Because of my stupidity and not being able to type very well for a few days I am a little late in this post.

Shortly after entering high school, I met my best friend to which we quickly discovered our birthday's were only a week apart. In high school she always brought me my present on her birthday, it kind of became tradition. We were college roommates until she made a life changing decision and left for the Navy. Whether she was a few states away, across the country or half way around the world she has always been there no matter what.

We received equally exciting birthday presents. I will be going to Savannah, Ga for St. Patty's Day. There are not enough words to tell you how excited I am about this and she was the first one I wanted to share my surprising news with. A few days before her birthday she left for Vegas for a week. She posted lots of pictures so I was able to take the journey with her. But, she was lucky enough to have her brother and his wife join them in the fun. I believe at that moment her parents were looking down on them proud that when it is really important; they make time for each other.

Throughout my life I have had the great privilege to meet, learn from, cry with, laugh with and grow with her. Without her, I would have not found my first job, learned to love art class or learned to savor the pure silence of just spending time with your best friend. I can honestly say her absence would have made me a different person.

I'm not sure I have ever told her.....My son LOVES the fact that she is his god-mother. He calls her his G-ma and gets really excited when he going to see her. It is really sweet. He reminds me all the time what a great choice I made in so many ways.

So although I am late in my post the sentiment is just as true even though it is about a week late.

HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY JUSTINE!!!

Love Ya!!

Surviving the Insanity.....

Since celebrating my birthday the days have been slightly insane.

Two days after my birthday we had to be at the kids school for Katie's 2nd Grade Music Performance. It was all about recycling and saving the planet. Katie was a fish suffering in the water from pollution. It was really cute!!

Thanks to some wonderful friends of Camp Luck we were able to score tickets to a Charlotte Checkers game. Katie, Jack and Maddie had never been to an event like this and were just in awe of such a huge arena. We had such fun teaching the kids about hockey. They loved the Zamboni Machine. Jack wanted to know if he could get a chance to ride on it. It had been a while since we were able to just hang out and laugh, cheer and boo with other heart families instead of who is in the hospital having surgery.

The following day spent most of it at a friend's house to learn how to brew beer and just hangout. It was four families and 8 kids. It was pure chaos but I can not remember the last time I had so much fun. I laughed harder, talked about things not related to the heart, it felt normal. Not that we truly know what normal is......it reminded me of days before Madelynn's diagnosis. More importantly it showed me life can be that way again with some adjustments. I was completely exhausted when I arrived home but the good kind.

After this fun but exhausting weekend, I told Phil I was taking my birthday money and going shopping without any children. He needed to get the kids to Sunday School and I would see him at dinner. At first I felt kind of bad, but the more I thought about it I spend ALMOST ALL my time with the kids. One afternoon won't kill him and I needed a break from the insanity.

As I was walking out the door I get my phone and see my mom called. She asked what I was doing. When I told her, I asked if you wanted to meet me? What mother daughter team would say no to an afternoon of shopping?? Not any mother daughter team I know. It was really a lot of fun and I was really glad she called.

However, one of the things I missed......when Katie was in the shower getting ready to go to class her loose tooth fell out. This is her fifth tooth. After the rough road she has had with losing teeth it was nice she had a normal experience.

Katie was excited about her gift from the tooth fairy and asked if she could take her money to the school store. She wanted new pencils and erasers. I told her it was her money so off to school the next day she went to school with her purse and money in tow. Had no idea the $2.00 in coins would bring so much happiness.

A week in the life.....can be truly exhausting but with all those smiles how can you not keep moving.

My 12 Days of Christmas...Day 10

When I discovered Day 10's topic I was really excited. I wasn't sure why it came to me for today but it did. Then the more I thought about it I almost talked myself out of writing about it. I didn't really have a great story to tie it to Christmas. That was until I read a comment from a friend.

As my 12 days of Christmas is creeping to an end you always 'end ' with a friend. So today I am celebrating Friends!!! I'm not going to deny that family is important because it reminds you of who you are and your history. However, friends are a different kind of family. Friends trudge that road with you everyday, learn everything about you sometimes things that even your family doesn't know and love you just as much as family.

Friends help you celebrate those huge lifetime highs....the day you graduated, the day you were married, the day your children were born and sometimes other very special days. They even help you see the light at the end of the tunnel on your darkest days. We all know those types of days. No one's darkest days are ever the same and hardly ever come about the same way. Friends are the ones who help you bury your parents, they are also the ones that keep you together when your child could have died.

My best friend has a HUGE heart and ALWAYS puts others first. When we met in high school we discovered our birthday's were only a week apart. As long as I can remember, my friend always gave me my birthday present on her birthday except once. That one time is probably the birthday I will remember most.

When my best friend entered the NAVY she was going to be away on our Birthdays. That first year she was gone I was really sad. I remember working that day when around the corner came her parents. They brought me a present, a card, a giant cookie and lots of hugs. Her mom has been gone a few years now and her father passed away this year. It is a special memory I will treasure forever.

I am grateful that God made our paths cross back in the Fall of 1986 and through all the moving, military, getting married and having kids we still make time to see each other at least once a year. She is that one friend that no matter the amount of time between calls or visits it is ALWAYS like I just talked to her yesterday.

As you share in the Birth of Christ and celebrate with your families don't forget those friend members who are just as important as family. The comment from my friend was, "I have really enjoyed reading these everyday." That alone made my 12 days of Christmas blogging worth it.

A short little trip.......

The day started out very gloomy, gray and rainy. We showered, dressed and headed to Fall Church, VA not far from the days events. My excitement was building in a strange kind of way. I haven't seen my best friend of over 20 years in about seven months and I couldn't wait to see her. Oddly enough I believe her Father would have understood that.

However, the reason I was headed to Virginia was to help my friend and her family say farewell to her father. He was retired Navy and was to be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

In the past I have only heard about what this event entails or seen it on TV but never witnessed it first hand. Experiencing it live is one of the most serene, breath-taking, reverent moments of my life. As we entered the cemetery we saw the rolling green hills, lined with the white headstones in amazing perfection.

As we waited for the events of the ceremony to get started, we watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown solider. Speechless as I was after that, watching my friend and her brother walk hand in hand behind the horse drawn carriage, I found tears just gentling rolling down my face.

This day I will remember the crisp, clean, white Navy uniforms, the impeccable perfection at the way they folded the American flag, the stunning amount of medals each solider displayed on his chest but most of all the words I heard are in blazed in my memory. "On behalf of the President of the United States and a Grateful Nation....." at that point the tears just fell in a slow steady stream.

I'm not going to lie I almost fell over when the 21 gun salute started. I knew it would happen but I wasn't paying attention to see they were getting ready. At the beginning of "Taps" I looked up at the sky and the gray clouds were gone and all you could see over the green rolling hills were blue sky and sunshine.

"Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Brett for the kiss of sunshine".

Probably the one thing I was most unprepared for was the letters my friend and her brother read out loud to their father before they closed the crypt in the columbarium. It was a final farewell that was sweet, honest and would have made him very proud.

Thank you Justine and James for including my family with yours. I will treasure the memory forever.

On a side note: You will see no pictures not even of my friend and I those few days because I of all people forgot my camera. I know my dad just let out a huge sigh. Of all the places to go and forget your camera this should not have been one of them.

A little something to share.......

Thursday I thought it would be a very boring weekend. I was very wrong. After I picked the kids up from school Thursday, I let them play outside. It was the warmest day of the year at 78 degrees and I didn't want to waste it.

Later that evening, Kaitlynn's first grade class performed during a PTO meeting. The bug theme was very cute. I didn't notice until I was watching the show that Kaitlynn had been practicing the songs for weeks. I heard her singing in the shower, cleaning her room and doing her homework. I loved all the bug hats.

During an earlier conversation, I thought Phil would have to work late Friday and most of Saturday. It turned out he made it home sooner than expected Friday and he and the kids goofed around on the trampoline. Maddie and I took a few pictures. It was a fun afternoon and the kids slept incredibly well Friday night. Saturday, except for a short visit with my mom, was a bust because Phil was gone working most of the day.

We made up for it today as we grilled out dinner with friends and rang in the beginning of racing season with the Daytona 500. While nobody's driver, in the room, won I thought it was kind of cool a rookie won. To be honest, I didn't want any of our driver's to win because in the last five years which ever driver won the Daytona 500 the driver tanked the rest of the season.

So although I didn't get to do the things I wanted this weekend I thoroughly enjoyed the First Grade Bug performance, I did have a good time with the kids Friday and excellent dinner and fellowship Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy the pictures. Have a Great Week!!

39 is not old....

Do I feel old???? The simple answer...No.

My daughter asked me if 39 feels different than 38. When I told her No, she asked are you sure??? Phil has been cracking jokes all day about me being his old lady. Since he is 4 years younger he thinks he's pretty funny. Then I was reminded that next year I officially become a cougar because of Phil's age. Today was a lot of good, silly laughs.

My blackberry (early birthday present) started chirping at 5:15 this morning. Thanks Justine even that early it made me smile. Of course best friends always want to be the first to send birthday wishes. My phone never stopped it was alot of nice interruptions. As I am typing it is still chirping.

Maddie sang Happy Birthday to me about six times with pretend cakes she build out of blocks. Katie and Jack thoroughly enjoyed the double chocolate ice cream cake Phil brought home. It was Yummy!!!

39 years......It makes me wonder if I am really living life the way I was meant to. Like any person, my life is filled with mistakes and scars. But those memories do not control my life. When I finally made that decision I have been happier than I ever thought possible. Let me assure you it is not because my life is easy or because I won the lottery. It is because my life is surrounded by family and friends that have been there for ever smile, burst of laughter, tears of joy and those of pure fear.

I am grateful for the friendships from those dating all the way back to kindergarten, that began the first day of high school, developed from former jobs or that came from life changing experiences. I am not the same person because of it and I like the person I am becoming.

Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful, sweet and even some silly birthday wishes. It truly helped make my birthday complete.

Trying to process the mess

It seems like ever since we came back from our trip at Thanksgiving I am in my very own personal hurricane. I feel like I am just no stop spinning, stick my head out to take a breathe and back into the whirlwind I go. I let the last eight weeks of events control my life and it is now time to let it go.

While trying to celebrate my oldest child's 7th birthday we were informed that one of the Heart Children we have known since joining LCK in November 2008 passed away. This amazing young man was the epitome of this group. Seeing him "really living life" gave moms like me hope that my child could have this same type full life experience. When he died it reminded me how precious life is and not to take a second of it for granted.

But I am not going lie....I was really scared. Seeing this young man, you did not know how sick he really was. Seeing my daughter even on the day before her surgery it still amazes me that she should have died. But today as she runs into pre-school and she seems totally fine, how do I know the difference between those two days is she fine or not. Some days the stress eats me alive.

The last few weeks were not what I expected or hoped for either. It has been really sad, depressing and oddly lacking in laughter. I was very sadden by the death of my best friends father. I didn't have any really spectacular words to help ease her pain except to tell her that I loved her and I would see her soon. Oh how I wanted to help take some of her pain away.

In the same week I was informed that someone I knew from my last job passed away in his sleep at the ripe old age of 27. I just kind of looked up at the sky and asked God...'Are you kidding me?!?!?!' What appears to be a normal healthy male goes to sleep not feeling well and dies. I can't imagine what his parents are going through or his friends, I know, that found him the next morning.

While this is going on we have a snow storm one Sunday evening followed by ice the following evening and Katie and Jack missed four days of school, went to school on a two hour delay Friday and then they were out for a three day weekend for MLK Holiday. By Thursday of this adventure, I told Phil I needed to go to work or I was going to lose my mind. So he stayed home with the kids and I went to work.

The last eight weeks I have really felt beaten down and defeated and I want out of this rut. It has really been a struggle too. However, I am finding joy in old and new places. This is a new year and I refuse to take the heartbreak and sadness with me into the new year. One of the things that I have done is not worry about the stuff that will always be there. The dishes, dusting and laundry will always be there. But my parents, husband, friends and children may not. So everyday after school homework gets done, rooms are cleaned and we eat dinner as a family. Even if Phil has to work late the rest of us are still at the dining room table with his place left ready in case he makes it home to join us.

The kids are back in swimming lessons and it is as if the lessons never stopped. Lessons are longer and later than before so when we get home it is showers and to bed. Non swim lessons night, dinner and dishes are done by 6:30 so I can do anything or nothing with the kids. Jackson asked me to change his room around the way he wanted. I thought why not what would it really hurt. Since I did it, his room is clean EVERY day.

Back during the snow storm when the snow came down in HUGE flakes for hours I stood in the snow in my pajamas, wearing Phil's shoes and coat and took pictures. I wish I would have taken video of Phil bouncing Katie and Jack on the trampoline in the snow. The flying snow and all of the giggling would wash any tear away at least for a little while.

So going forward, I am going to find something to laugh out loud about everyday. I am not going to get frustrated when I have to wait for Maddie to blow Katie and Jack kisses as they walk into school. I am going to remember that every hug, kiss and 'I love you' matter and don't take them for granted. I am going to find someone to pass my positive energy to everyday even if they don't wanted.

Don't get me wrong I will still worry about Maddie and some days worry too much about what could be. Will Jackson mature fast enough to accomplish kindergarten and will Katie figure out how to get along with her classmates and not get into so much trouble. I am still going to get frustrated with my kids and need that few minutes of complete silence where someone isn't yelling Mommy 24/7/365. But my goal is to make those events less and less the center of everyday life.

My hope is that throughout the year I always find something to hope for to bring better balance in my life.

RIP Mr. Brett....

This fall will be 25 years since I met my very best friend. There are some days I don't know what I would do without her. Today she mourns the loss of her father and what I wouldn't give to take some of her pain away. She called me twice today once to tell me that he would be gone soon and once to tell me he was gone. I would have done anything to be there to help her along the way.

Back during Thanksgiving I had the glorious gift to visit with her and her family. I knew when I left that it would be the last time I would see him. But what I remember most about that visit was just sitting and talking to him like it was 1987, the genuine hug he gave when I first arrived and when I left. I watched him read books to my son and thought what a sweet memory.

When I came home from work today I needed to find something. I ripped through 25 years of photos to find them but they are the only pictures I ever took of my friend's parents. Her mother passed away years ago and today her father went to join her. These are photos of the day before she left for the Navy and the surprise party we threw for her (with her parents help) to wish her well. It would be the last time I would see her for a very long time. I had no idea today they would be such a treasured memory.

Pray for Jacob's Family

After Madelynn's surgery two years ago, throughout her recovery we would find gifts in her room. Different non-profit groups left gifts as she recovered. One of these groups was Levine Cardiac Kids (LCK).

One night while Madelynn was recovering in the hospital Phil and I went down to one of their meetings. What a stellar group of people! I came to know an Amazing LCK mom, Kim. Her son, Jacob, had a few defects with his heart; one was the same defect as Madelynn.

It always gave me some sense of relief when I would see Jacob because he was a teen-ager. One of the oldest cardiac kids in the group, he gave me hope. Just looking at his infectious smile and watching his teenager antics, he showed us life would find normal again after Madelynn recovered.

Over the last two years as I have attended meetings and events I have talked to Kim some about Jacob and his needing surgery this year. The surgery took place Wednesday December 1st. I didn't want to pry so I would check his caring bridge page or face book pages of other LCK moms for an update. Thursday a one sentence post took my breath away. "Jacob needs a miracle. Pray Hard."

I just started to pray harder.

This weekend was Kaitlynn's Birthday and Party so I was trying to stay focused on that. But Saturday Morning something struck me as I got dressed, I put on my Camp Luck shirt said a little prayer and started my day. Finally, late Saturday Night I checked a few web pages to find an update.

Jacob passed away from complications of that surgery.

This was a wonderful young man who will be missed by so many. He was a true leader among the cardiac kids in so many ways. It has been difficult to explain to the younger children that he is gone. However, it was nice to hear they were able to donate his liver and kidneys to save other lives.

Please just pray for Jacob's family as they mourn his loss and celebrate his life it is going to be a long road.

Fort Macon State Park

(I did not take this picture.)

So this is Fort Macon State Park. This ariel view is cool but does not do the fort it self justice. I was just in awe at how beautiful it really was. I hope one day we can go back to see it again.

(I took this one)

In May of 2009, Phil's brother was married at Ft. Macon State Park in NC. It was truly one of the best times we have ever had as a family. I could have spent all day at this fort. It was stunning in all of it's history.

(I took this one)

This is the road you travel on through the fort. The days we were there the sun was so bright and beautiful it just made the colors in the cobblestone just jump off the road. It was easier to travel on the brick part of the road but you know me I LOVE a challenge so I walked mostly on the cobblestone.

It reminds me of my life. I could travel the smoother, simpler surface but why? I believe I was designed to ride the bumpier, more colorful road in life. I am strong enough to handle it and by choosing it the reward is so much greater.

Look at the journey I have finished so far and not alone I might add. The cobblestones were big, bold and brash. There were days that I did not feel I could go on. I was stuck between the stones where the water flows when it rains and I was going to get washed away. But it takes more than water to get me down or to stop me from swimming against the water flow.

Some days I wish I could go back to the orchard to where my life made sense but I don't wish it for long. Today I just have to remember to be happy for the road I am on and accept whatever cobblestone throws me off course and keep moving. Think of all the things I would have missed had I stayed in the orchard or on the smoother surface.

Here's to the bumpy ride I have made it this far.

Summer Part II

Even thought Kaitlynn had to start school last week, it didn't feel like summer was officially over until today. Tomorrow, Jackson will start Kindergarten. Thinking about the second half of our summer I don't think the kids could have really had it any better.

In the third week of July as we celebrated Jack's 5th birthday, Kaitlynn and Jackson spent a week at Camp Gabe and Loved It! Some of the friends Kaitlynn made at VBS were also and her camp week. She was ecstatic. Jack was able to have a little party with his camp friends plus a family party. I think we celebrated for a week.

Following Camp Gabe, Kaitlynn and Jackson discovered swimming lessons. We have spent so much time at the water park and they just love being in the water that I signed them up. Tonight I watched Kaitlynn swim one complete length of the pool without help or a life jacket. I am not sure who was more excited me or Kaitlynn.

At the end of July, I was able to do something I hadn't done in two years. Travel a great distance from home with Madelynn. There were several people who had not met Madelynn or had only seen her in pictures. I introduced her to her Great-Great Uncle and his wife, she was able to see Grandma Angie again and she met my mom's step dad for the first time, who I fondly call Grandpa.

During this visit I also went to my 20 year school reunion, WOW have things changed but yet the important things stayed the same. You see I made this trip with my best friend, we met the first day of high school and we walked back into those halls 20 years later together. She also brought her two year old daughter. Talk about funny times. Madelynn and Isabelle became fast friends it was cute to watch.

Weeks after Jackson's birthday we celebrated Madelynn's 2nd Birthday. Phil's sister and her husband were able to come and visit to help celebrate along with my parents and some of our close friends. You know those friends the ones that when I needed to take Madelynn to the ER at midnight I could call and wake them up and they were at the house in seconds. Most days they are more like family. We are most grateful for them.

This year Phil and I also celebrated out 11th wedding anniversary. We were able to go to dinner and not worry about any of those kids things. We even went to a restaurant that had very few children in it. It was nice to be in an adult world even if it was just for a few hours.

Our last hoorah for the summer, I took Kaitlynn and Madelynn to Mason, OH to see their Aunt and Uncle (my sister and brother-in-law) and their three daughters. Holy Tons of Girls! Batman! it was crazy but fun. This trip however was just Kaitlynn, Madelynn and I. Phil took Jackson to see his sister and brother-in-law in DC.

As our summer came to a close Kaitlynn, Jackson and Madelynn were able to go to the Carolina Panther Stadium and meet Sir Purr. This trip was not what I expected but at the end of the day they were very excited about meeting Sir Purr and couldn't stop talking about when I was trying to put them to bed.

At the beginning of the Summer I had no idea how I would keep the three of them busy but under a budget. It was not done without an incredible amount of help from friends and family. The kids had a wonderful summer and we just wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU for those that made it happen it did not go unnoticed.

Normally, I would not point anyone out but I have to give a huge THANK YOU to Ms. Amy. She took care of the kids on the days I had to work. She was always there when we needed her most. She has a huge heart and a very gentle soul to care for Kaitlynn, Jackson and Madelynn. We would have never made it through the craziest days with out her and her family. You truly are a Godsend and very much appreciated.

Eleven Years and counting..............

Except for the one photo of Phil and I on our wedding day I don't believe I have ever shared these photos before. It was a crazy, joyful, exhausting day. It is one I am not sure to forget as well as most of the people that joined us to celebrate. Every once and a while someone comes up to me to tell me that it was the most fun they have ever had at a wedding.

I can not take credit for that as our parents made it a wonderful day for us and it would not have been without them. THANK YOU!!

Things I won't forget......The ceremony starting 15 minutes late because my sister had to break every speed law known to man through Toledo to find Phil's ring in my luggage. Thanks Jen!! Being so nervous the as we sat down my knee started jerking so bad Phil could not stop laughing. The Unity Candle starting a fire during the wedding photos. Wiping out on the dance floor in my wedding dress....TWICE....I looked like a marshmallow on the floor. Cramming 9 people in a white Cadillac to get back to the hotel...we were a sight!!!

The Bacho Family

The Covey-Addler Family (most of them)

The Bride and Her Groom
Thinking back on that day I really had no idea what life would have in store for me. I just knew I was ready to start that life with Phil. Truly I never would have believed that I love him more today than the day I married him. I am completely in love with the man and father he has become. Our children are the luckiest kids in the world to have him as their guide.
I remember the day in August in Ohio being just warm enough with a gentle breeze. At one point after the wedding during the reception, I remember standing outside closing my eyes and just taking a deep breath and exhaling. All I could think of was this is it I am ready to take on the rest of my life.
We had know idea where the road would take us nor would I have ever believed we would have made it through so much. So here is to the first ELEVEN years and hoping for many more to come.
To Phil...you have held my heart for so long....THANK YOU for never letting go.
To my children....Kaitlynn, Jackson and Madelynn.....Our life would have never been complete without you...THANK YOU for showing us how big our hearts are and that you each have your own special place in it.
Happy Anniversary Phil!!!

Weekend Events

Last Thursday was when all of the events with the cardiologist happened. I asked the pediatrician if it was okay for Madelynn to travel out of state. He agreed as long as she did not go swimming until her heart is checked.

I was really glad we could travel because I had big plans. My best friend from high school and her daughter who will be two next month came to NC. The day after their arrival we, Madelynn, Isabelle, Justine and I, headed to O-H-I-O. Two, Two-year olds and their moms...what were we thinking............

Even the frustrated children while we were in a traffic jam that took us 2 miles in one hour. It was the craziest trip but well worth the end result. I was able to see my grandmother, my grandpa and my great uncle and aunt. They were also able to meet Madelynn for the first time. It was nice to see family. However, that was not the only reason my friend travelled 20 hours to hang out with me. We went to our 20th high school reunion.

The events of the weekend were lots of fun I laughed a lot, watched my daughter bond with my best friend's daughter and just had fun. It was funny to watch my daughter run the halls of my high school, see all the changes of the school and yet how it all remains the same.

To be honest I don't miss that time of my life, being a teen-ager, but I am more grateful today than ever for my best friend. Whether she is half way around the world in the Navy or right down the highway she will always be my best friend and is truly irreplaceable. Thanksgiving won't come fast enough see you then my friend.

Busy Weekend..........

Because of the slow times at Phil's job and taking the week off to see his father through surgery we had very limited resources to do much this weekend. We didn't even leave the town we lived in by more than two miles. But it was fun.......

There were plenty of events a few miles from our home. Saturday, we took the kids to the town festivities which included water slides, free gifts, watermelon eating contest, free lunch at the VFW and parade that the kids came home with baskets filled with candy. During the parade, Phil taught Jack to yell "Semper Fi" to the Marines as they rolled through. One of the Marines stopped dead, looked at Jack and said, "Semper Fi son."

When we made it back to the house the kids all went down for naps and I joined them it was GREAT!!

Later we had friends over for dinner and watched the race it was lots of fun with good laughs. It has been a long time that we were able to just laugh with friends. Phil grilled the food, my friend made homemade and I made the brownies. I have to say there is nothing like homemade ice cream over fresh made brownies in the summertime. Of course when topped with Hershey syrup I would eat it anytime.

Sunday Phil and I did not feel like doing much. Because Phil was gone for five days, last week, we had some of our favorite shows to catch up on. I don't usually like to watch them without him. Later Sunday we discussed taking the kids to see some local fireworks. I declined to take them. I think Phil was a little disappointed about my choice but the end result was much better than I could have ever thought.

Living in a small town, surrounded by other small towns and you get the coolest firework display. I walked through the house about 9:30pm and checked all the windows. I discovered that out one of my bedroom windows from the 2nd floor you could see some of the best fireworks. I called the kids to my room set it up where the three of them could sit and watch and just backed away.

Three little kids sitting on an old foot locker trunk, with wet hair from the shower, in there pj's and all you hear is "OOOHHH!, COOL!, Did you see that one mommy?!?!?!, WOW!!!!" Maddie kept saying, "irework mommy, irework!!"

I don't know how my parents did it taking us all to the river to watch the fireworks with the crowds and craziness that went on. I don't know how old we were when they started taking us. I do remember laughing a lot and just having alot of fun.

I hope my children remember that night because all I could do was smile as I listen to them commentate about the fireworks.

However, I wished Monday was as fun.

We decided to take the kids to the Rec. Center to the water park. This has become their favorite thing to do. We had just planned to go for two hours in the morning and that is usually enough for them and us. Today we ran into lots of people we knew. One of Katie's cheer leading friends and her family were there. Phil ran into a former co-worker and his family there. So we were having a great time.

However, they had to call everyone out of the pool because one of the parents decided to not follow the rules with their small child in diapers. The child left a present in the pool. Each child in diapers must where one of the swimmers pants and the plastic rubber pants then their swim suit. This prevents the presents in the pool.

Since this was not the normal 10 minute break for all the kids we were not prepared for it and neither was Jack. He and Phil were throwing a ball back and forth in the pool. Phil overthrew the ball or Jack just missed it. Jack went under water to get the ball when he came back up he hit his head on the edge of one of the water slides.

It was very chaotic at this unscheduled pool clearing and I had Maddie and Katie I was starting to panic when I could not find Jack. When I finally found he and Phil together Jack was crying and Phil said his head was bleeding. Phil took him in the bathroom and checked his head. He appeared to be ok with a minor cut. Unfortunately, head wounds bleed way too much.

Jack will let me put ice packs on it but when Phil and I mentioned stitches he screamed bloody murder and just started wailing with huge tears. I asked Phil again to look at it. He will only let Phil look at. Phil said it looks ok but it will be at least 5-6 days before he can swim again. He took a bath instead of a shower tonight and went to bed with an ice pack for his head. He said the ice packs feel good on his head.

My poor little man was having such a good weekend. I felt bad it ended this way. The only good thing is that I have to work the next 3 days so maybe by then his head will be scabbed up good so swimming will not bother it. Except for Jack's head wound it was a great weekend!

Friends

Recently I was on a non-profit face book page about CHD's. Parents, mostly mom's, were talking about how since their child was diagnosed with their CHD they have lost friends. My first thought was well then they really weren't your friend. However, that usually isn't true. Most of the time people don't know what to do when they know nothing about your situation. So yes there is always two sides to every story.

When it came to our story in many ways so many people surprised us. I had a friend everyday, yes everyday, for 21 days she called me to get her "Maddie update". She probably didn't know half the stuff I was talking about but she would listen and some days I just needed normal human contact other than medical staff. There are a few people I thought were friends, but when my life path changed and these people didn't cross my path anymore, I tried to keep in touch, they did not. I have to say maybe I could have tried harder but my life did not have time for me to try harder.

We also have friends that are neighbors we have known since they moved in. They stepped in and just did whatever we asked without question. I knew when Katie and Jack were in their care I never had to worry. We even had friends calling almost everyday wanting to know what we needed. These friends really wanted to help and just patiently waited. When we called they were there. All of these friends knew nothing about heart patients or could relate to anything we were experiencing on our journey. They were just there.

These same friends I still see several times a week. Our life is getting back to normal, whatever that is, and these friends are still there. Our life would not be complete without them, so much so they are almost like an extension of our family.

Don't get me wrong our family was there and in many ways went out of their way for us. Did things they didn't have too, but they do not live here. Only my parents live here and live 30-45 minutes away depending on the day. So on one of those days when I needed human contact or Maddie was not doing well I could always call one of them and they would be here. There will never be enough words to say Thank You for that.

We have also met and friend-ed lots of other heart families. Some of them have similar stories to ours while others have travelled a much more treacherous journey. Being around other heart families life was easier in so many ways. You already know about keeping germs away, there is a respect and understanding that never has to be explained if a child has a limitation, you just went with it. In the presence of other heart families someone has already experienced it if you want to know about it, ask.

It is really sad to hear about women and families who thought they could depend on "friends" that just walked out of their lives when the road turned into a roller coaster. I was glad to see that they have found "real friends". As for us, I am truly grateful for my friends that checked on us and really meant it when they asked if we needed anything. Hopefully someday we can return the favors and there are so many.........

Let God worry about tomorrow........

So I have said very little about it but lately somethings in life have been very tough to take. Work is slow for Phil which means no money coming in. Medical bills just never seem to go away. Some days in the quiet of my car on my long ride to work I sit and cry mostly from worry.

On the really busy times it would have been nice for Phil to come to a doctor visit for Maddie. However, he doesn't work for three days and the one day I would have wanted him to be off he has to work. In the craziness of this past weekend we saw each other in passing. Which makes me miss just vegging on the couch with him. As the kids age the time will come again.

However, over the last 24 hours I have been reminded that our situation could always be worse, if you ask and are willing to accept it on His terms God will always provide and not to ever overlook the smile or hug of a child. One day they will think they are too old for it.

We could have been one of those families who lost their home, a family member or their life was just turned upside down from the mid west tornadoes. I could be a single mom caring for a mentally challenged son and my power is about to be cut off. We could be the family that lost one child to a CHD and two months later the other child dies from meningitis. So yes my life could always be so much worse. All true stories by the way.

So today I am thankful for my job, family, children and glorious friends. Some how we will find a way to pay the medical bills and be happy with what is in front of us. I will remember to kiss my children every night as I pray over them for God's protection and peaceful sleep. I will remember to be happy they are alive when they wake me at 6am ready to start the day and I feel like I need toothpicks to hold my eyes lids open. I will just be thankful for today and let God worry about tomorrow.

Hope your Monday was uneventful.

Spring Visit 2010

Every year for her spring break Phil's sister, Joy, and her mother, Nana Patti, always come to visit us. This year was no exception. However, this year I think I laughed more than ever before. Phil and I just had the best time. We will be sad to see them go but so glad they took the time to come see us.

The weather wasn't the best but we had enough days of sunshine to enjoy the outdoors and get some of the best pictures. We went to dinner, the kids went to a movie, Katie had visitors in her cheer leading class and at school for lunch. Overall the kids have great memories of the visit and love the gift.

Enjoy the pictures.

Exit stage left.............

After 9+ years of service at my current job I will be walking out of the building one final time Friday afternoon. I have accepted a job at the church my parents belong to in their finance department. This will be a great new journey and a true leap of faith on my behalf.

I knew one day we would turn down the road to better things with everything we have experienced with Madelynn. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the change to happen so quickly or for things to fall into place as if they always belonged there. So needless to say I am absolutely thrilled to start this new journey.

However, I am very sad to be leaving my Plaza family. I won't be passing the contract sales department and hear, "cheese please" or "woo-hoo". There will be no walking up to say good morning to "Maw-Maw". I will miss seeing "Paw-Paw" in the morning and hearing stories about his grandson. I looked forward to calling Susan Monday morning and telling her some crazy story about something the kids did before I placed my order with her. The laughter was always the best medicine for whatever ailed you.

These were just a few of the things that helped make the ugliness of the world melt away and remind you that their really are good people in the world. These good people could always make you laugh even on some of my darkest days. I will miss them terribly.

Most of all I believe I will miss Bill Sr. He is a man with a heart of gold and someone who truly cares about his employees. Every day he expected 110% of you but he always came back and reminded you how much he appreciated you. Running a company is not easy and making tough decision is not for the weak. I truly appreciated the job for so many years. I hope my replacement sees the good man in him as they take over my duties.

Farewell Plaza Family.........
